FSC Apprentices Honoured at FNU Graduation with Top National Awards

Lautoka, Fiji- Two rising stars from the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited (FSC) apprenticeship programme have been nationally recognised at the 2024 Fiji National University (FNU) graduation — a proud moment for FSC and technical education in Fiji.

Mohammed Tanweer Hussain and Arsh Hussein received top awards for their outstanding academic and practical performance, reflecting both individual excellence and the success of FSC’s longstanding investment in technical education and youth empowerment.

Mohammed Tanweer Hussain, an Electrical Fitter apprentice based at FSC Labasa Mill, was awarded Overall Best Apprentice 2024 and Best Apprentice in Trade — one of the highest national honours for apprentices. His performance demonstrated technical mastery, discipline, and leadership throughout the programme.

Mohammed’s achievement speaks not only to his capabilities but also to the supportive environment FSC provides.

“It’s a humbling feeling to be recognised this way. My journey wasn’t always easy, but FSC gave me the platform to grow, learn, and push beyond my limits. I hope my achievement encourages other young Fijians to believe in themselves and make the most of opportunities like this,” said Mohammed.

His reflection highlights the personal growth and resilience that FSC’s apprenticeship programme is known for — building both skill and character in equal measure.

Arsh Hussein, an Electrical Fitter apprentice from the Lautoka Mill, earned a Merit Award and the Gold Medal in Certificate IV in Electrical Fitting. These honours celebrate both academic excellence and hands-on ability, and Arsh stood out among a highly competitive group.

“Winning the Gold Medal and Merit Award was a proud moment — not just for me, but for my family and everyone who believed in me. My time at FSC taught me discipline, teamwork, and how to turn theory into real skills. I’m grateful for the mentors who guided me, and for the chance to grow in a field I’m passionate about,” said Arsh.

FSC Chief Executive Officer Bhan Pratap Singh commended the apprentices:

“Mohammed and Arsh represent the very best of what the FSC apprenticeship programme is designed to do — empower young people with the skills, confidence, and mindset to succeed. Their achievements inspire not only their peers but everyone in the sugar industry. We are proud to stand behind the next generation of technical leaders.”

The FSC Apprenticeship Programme, delivered in collaboration with Fiji National University, blends rigorous academic instruction with practical, on-the-job training at FSC mills. Over the past decade, FSC has supported more than 200 apprentices, many of whom have gone on to take leadership roles in the sugar industry and beyond.

This recognition highlights FSC’s deep commitment to developing homegrown talent and preparing young Fijians for success in high-demand technical careers. Mohammed and Arsh’s stories are powerful reminders of how mentorship, opportunity, and perseverance can transform futures.

FSC is a key driver of Fiji’s agricultural and industrial sectors. With a focus on sustainable growth, innovation, and workforce development, FSC continues to build strong communities and a resilient national workforce through strategic investments such as its flagship apprenticeship programme.
