Safety Response and Recovery Efforts on Track at Lautoka Mill
Lautoka – The Fiji Sugar Corporation Ltd (FSC) confirms that an incident involving an employee who was engaged in the routine clearing of bagasse from a conveyor belt occurred at the Lautoka Mill yesterday. This resulted in an injury to the employee. Immediate medical attention was provided, and the employee is currently receiving care at Lautoka Hospital. Our thoughts are with him and his family, and FSC is extending full support during his recovery.
In the course of ensuring a safe and efficient rescue, the conveyor belt system was carefully dismantled to allow for immediate access. While this safety-first response has led to a temporary halt in milling operations, FSC commends and is deeply grateful for the swift and coordinated action of the emergency and mill teams on the ground.
Repairs to the conveyor system are actively underway. The estimated timeframe for completion is approximately 36 hours. Lautoka Mill is projected to resume crushing operations by mid-to-late afternoon tomorrow.
As a precautionary measure, harvesting operations across all sectors have been temporarily suspended until operations recommence. Lorry drivers who were in the mill yard at the time of the incident have been safely transported home.
FSC remains committed to the highest standards of workplace safety and operational resilience. A thorough review of the incident is being undertaken to ensure ongoing safety and reliability across our milling network.
